Overview

SOSi is seeking an Arabic Language Specialist/Cultural Advisor for on-site interpretation and translation services. We are looking for an individual with skills in Arabic and English. Personnel can expect to be deployed overseas and may live and work in an area designated by the U.S. Government as an Imminent Danger and Hostile Fire Zone. The Arabic Language Specialist/Cultural Advisor will be required to submit to various pre-deployment medical screenings and be of sufficient physical health to endure at least 320 days of 365 deployed to potentially hostile and austere locations. Personnel are required to meet US military standards for deployment to the Theater of Operations. The Government will provide billeting for personnel during pre-deployment, processing, and at deployment locations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares idiomatically correct and technically accurate translations of critical, sensitive, and unformatted material; material will be written by and for subject matter experts on a wide range of highly complex scientific, technical, and military subjects.
  • Writes and speaks in clear, concise grammar and pronunciation in the Target Language and English.
  • Demonstrates in depth familiarity with the culture, economics, history, and societal/ethnic/tribal aspects of the host country.
  • Conducts consecutive, accurate translations and summarizations of material.
  • Provides idiomatic translations of non-technical material using correct syntax and expression to and from the target language and English.
  • Reads and translates handwritten material.
  • Scans and processes material, utilizing the target language for critical and essential elements of information.
  • Tailors language to fit audience.
  • Counsels, persuades, negotiates, and represents a point of view.
  • Conducts interpretation simultaneous, consecutive, escort, telephonic, and/or voiceovers.
  • Must be prepared to travel to countries throughout the Middle East or elsewhere as mission support requires; employees will be based in a Middle Eastern country from which periodic temporary duty (TDY) travel will be required. Security, travel, lodging, and meals will be provided during TDY periods.

Qualifications

  • Active in Scope Top Secret Clearance.
  • Must score 3/3/3 in Arabic/Levantine (listening, reading, and speaking).
  • Understands speech (in a standard dialect and Levantine), inferences, and emotional overtones and rarely needs to ask for paraphrasing or explanation.
  • Writes effectively in most formal and informal exchanges.
  • Understands all styles/forms of speech and has a strong sensitivity to sociolinguistic and cultural references.
  • Able to deal unobtrusively with the local populace.
  • Familiarity with and ability to conduct oneself in accordance with the local culture and customs.
  • Works cooperatively with U.S. Forces, and other security force personnel.
  • Functions during a level of heightened state of threat, during extended periods of high pressure and stress.
  • Functions as an integral member of a team of highly trained professionals responsible for the safety and security of personnel and resources.
  • Able to use Microsoft Office.

Working Conditions

  • Personnel will work in harsh and austere locations.
  • Ability to lift and/or move objects or packages of up to 25 lbs.
  • Work environment is often stressful and detail oriented.
  • Temporary Duty (TDY) with travel to countries within the Middle East outside of the assigned country will be required.
